Overview

A modern ultra-supercritical (USC) coal-fired power plant can achieve electrical efficiencies of over 42% and can exceed 90% when operating in combined heat and power mode. USC plants use main steam parameters of 650°C or above at pressures between 275 and 320 bar. Depending on the design, they fire hard coal or lignite. Special designs are also available for low-volatile coals. In most cases, pulverised fuel low-NOx burners are used together with staged combustion using secondary and over-fire air. SCR, ESP and FGD further remove NOx, particulate matter and SOx from the flue gas. Modern processes are designed with a double reheat Rankine process and use a corresponding multi-pressure steam turbine. The heat from the exhaust steam can be further utilised in combined heat and power. The collected condensate is degassed, preheated and repressurised up to 350 bar by high-pressure boiler feed pumps for further steam generation.
